Day 3: The Trinity - Jesus
John 14:1-6
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
In today’s world of home improvement and restoration television we have at the top of their career game, Chip and Joanna Gaines, stars of the show, “Fixer Upper.”
In the beginning of every episode of “Fixer Upper,” Chip and Joanna take their client(s) house hunting. Most of these homes are dated and or dilapidated, and require a bit of imagination and trust from the potential homeowners before purchasing. Chip and Jo will give these sometimes-doubtful house hunters a vision of what the space could look like in their capable hands.
At the end of every episode, Chip and Jo put on a big reveal of the newly renovated home and the results are always stunning and jaw dropping. The Gaines’ take what was abandoned and broken and make something spectacular and beautiful.
Like the house hunters on “Fixer Upper,” it’s sometimes hard to believe that Jesus can fully provide something as incredible as heaven, in light of a world so hurting and broken. When Jesus is speaking to His disciples in John 14:1-6, He is declaring that heaven is His home and in order to go there, they need to go through Him first. The heavenly home that He describes has never been decrepit or dated, but it does require believing Jesus; believing that what He says is true and that He is who He says He is.
Today, as we segue into learning more about the Trinity and how our relationship with God cultivates the Fruit of the Spirit in our lives, let’s pause for prayer:

- Jesus says in verse 16, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” He is again declaring that He is the only true God to His closest friends. In this time of devotion, where do you need to see Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life? He’s talking about heaven in this passage but we can apply this passage to our everyday journey in God. Take a few moments to ask Him.
- Yesterday we talked about the results of our flesh nature from Galatians 5. Taking John 14:16 deeper, how is Jesus the “way, truth and life” in your “self-life” or “fleshly” struggles? Take a moment to ask Him. Also, prayerfully read these scriptures out loud:
- 2 Corinthians 12:9- But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
- Romans 8:26- Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
- Hebrews 12:4-6 After all, you have not yet reached the point of sweating blood in your opposition to sin. And have you forgotten his encouraging words spoken to you as his children? He said, “My child, don’t underestimate the value of the discipline and training of the Lord God, or get depressed when he has to correct you. For the Lord’s training of your life is the evidence of his faithful love. And when he draws you to himself, it proves you are his delightful child.”
- As a disciple or follower of Christ, what are your next steps towards making Jesus the “the way, and the truth, and the life”? Do you trust Him to prepare your hearts for His Kingdom work on earth, just like the Father is preparing a home for you in heaven? If so, what are your next steps towards trusting Him today? Write them down, tell a friend to build community, and step into obedience today!
